Twitter, SEO Ranking and Some Facts

Everyone knows about Twitter by now. Here are some facts about twitter posts that are relevant to SEO:

–Many Twitter users like to use tiny url’s to link their posts to more information beyond the 140 character limit. Keep in mind search engines do not index tiny url’s, but they do pass PR on to the url’s.

–Twitter adds a “nofollow” tag to links posted by users. For those who don’t know, that means Twitter is saying ignore these links. Most SE’s comply with that like Google, MSN, etc. A few like Ask.com don’t, so you can get some value as far as site rankings with some smaller SE’s

–Twitter posts that do contain a tiny url, tend to get higher click through rates, than tiny url’s left on other posting mechanisms like Blogs.

–The biggest positive is that it links users, traffic, unique visitors, etc. to your site which is what you’re after in the end.

Twitter isn’t a huge SEO difference maker, but is something that should be considered along with all the traditional site site ranking and keyword ranking tools.
